Fidelio Board Breakfast – "Effective Chairman, Effective Board", 16 January 2018

In our work building and developing Boards, Fidelio clearly sees the exceptional demands on the Chairman. These demands come from shareholders and stakeholders and are accentuated by business disruption. An effective Chair is the key to an effective Board.

We were delighted to welcome as a guest speaker at Fidelio’s Board breakfast, David Jackson, Company Secretary BP plc, to shed light on the all-important support required for effective Chairmen. David has over 20 years of Board-level experience, supporting  two Boards and working with six Chairmen. In particular, David addressed three key questions:

1.   What are the challenges facing the Chairman and the Board?

2.   Given those challenges, what support do Chairmen and their Boards need? Are there different models?

3.   How should Boards be thinking about succession for both Chairmen and Non-Executive Directors?
