Fidelio Update – "A Seat at the Table" on a Public Company Board

London, 30th January 2017 – Fidelio is committed to building and developing highly effective public company Boards. Our “A Seat at the Table” Programme for senior female executives and Directors contributes to the pipeline of tomorrow’s female CEOs and Chairs and will next be held on Wednesday 6th – Thursday 7th September 2017, at Leeds Castle, Kent.

“A Seat at the Table” addresses head on the challenges facing public company Board Directors:

1. Licence to Operate and the Governance Framework
Scrutiny of Boards – by regulators, the media and the public – is on the increase, particularly in the UK. Participants on the “A Seat at the Table” Programme will be challenged by Professor Bob Garratt, Visiting Professor, Cass Business School, on how to “Stop the Rot” – the topic of Bob’s 2017 sequel to his seminal “The Fish Rots from the Head” (1996). In our Programme, Bob will share case studies of failed corporate and political governance and shed light on future models of Board effectiveness.

We will also be joined at Leeds Castle once again by Ann Francke, Chief Executive, Chartered Management Institute, who will pick up the theme of changing government expectations for Boards, including accountability for a good corporate culture, as well as closing the gender pay gap. “A Seat at the Table” acknowledges the centrality of the Board’s role in securing the licence to operate.

2. Shareholder Expectations
Equally, the Programme tackles what shareholders expect from public company Directors. At each iteration of “A Seat at the Table” we have welcomed highly experienced portfolio managers, including Christine Chow, Associate Director, Hermes Investment Management; Jane Coffey, previously Head of Equities, Royal London Asset Management; and Susan Sternglass Noble, Senior Adviser, The Investor Forum, and previously Portfolio Manager, AXA Investment Managers and CQS.

“A Seat at the Table” explores short-termism vs long termism; remuneration and Board composition; and what effective Board engagement with shareholders looks like from a buy-side perspective. And in September 2017, we will once again view the role and impact of the Board Director through the eyes of the investor.

3. Above the Parapet
Public companies have a high degree of accountability and Directors must be prepared to put their heads above the parapet. “A Seat at the Table” reviews what happens when Board Directors find themselves in the line of fire.

With Chris Heimann, Spacecraft Ltd and Head of Improvisation, RADA, participants rehearse Board presence and resilience including in times of crisis. The theme is also taken up by David Pearl, former Deputy Company Secretary, BP, who reflects on the Board-level response to crisis, and the Board’s critical role in pre-empting crisis.
